Non Consultant Hospital Doctors (NCHD) Recruitment Process

Within the Health Service Executive (HSE), there are two primary recruitment periods (rotations) each year: January and July. Additionally, throughout the year, vacancies may arise for needs of varying durations to cover periods between.

NCHDs are employed as a Senior House Officer (SHO) or as a Registrar. Posts are determined by Hospital requirements. Posts offered during standard rotation periods are generally 6 or 12 month contracts.

Irish Medical Council (IMC) Registration

Registration with the IMC is required prior to taking any post in the Republic of Ireland. Doctors employed in NCHD posts are most commonly registered on the General Division of the Medical Council Register. For additional information on registration and eligibility:

Shortlisting and Interviewing

Only those meeting Hospital vacancy requirements are shortlisted for interview. Shortlisting is based on an initial assessment of qualifications and experience for the particular role and grade. Interviews are conducted in person or virtually using video conferencing facilities. Telephone interviews are not permitted.

Documentation Requirements for NCHDs

The list below contains primary documentation required for appointment. Other secondary documentation is also required, and our Compliance Department will advise during this process:

  • Evidence of Registration with IMC
  • Evidence of Residency English language requirements
  • Valid work permit (where appropriate)
  • Evidence of Garda Vetting Clearance Overseas (where required)
  • Evidence of Occupational Health Clearance
  • Birth Certificate
  • Passport
  • Minimum 2 References

References

Must be from current and previous employers, educational institutions or organisations which one has been associated. At least one of the two references must be from the current/most recent supervising Consultant/employer.

English language Requirements

All NCHDs taking up employment with the HSE, not registered with the Irish Medical Council in any of the divisions of the Register of Medical Practitioners prior to 1st January 2015, or who did not complete the entirety of their under-graduate medical training in the Republic of Ireland, are required to provide evidence of English Language. Depending on where the Medical Degree Certificate was received, corresponding documentation is required. If determined that an English Language Test is required, certification via one of the following recognized English Language Tests must be submitted:

Garda Vetting
If an NCHD has resided overseas, police clearances from these locations are also required.
