Director of Nursing


Position Overview:

As the Director of Nursing, you will hold responsibility for the overall operational, clinical, and regulatory oversight of the nursing home. This role ensures full compliance with HIQA standards and the requirements of the Health Act 2007. You will provide strong, visible leadership, foster a positive and inclusive workplace culture, and ensure a high-quality, person-centred environment that supports residents’ physical, emotional, social, and spiritual wellbeing.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the day-to-day management and strategic direction of the nursing home, ensuring the delivery of exceptional standards of care.
  • Act as the senior representative of the service at all times, making decisions in the best interests of residents, the home, and the wider organisation.
  • Maintain responsibility for the centre’s registration and ensure adherence to all HIQA regulations and relevant statutory obligations.
  • Promote a culture of dignity, respect, and compassion for residents, while creating a supportive and empowering environment for staff.
  • Provide leadership to a multidisciplinary team, ensuring effective staffing, supervision, performance management, and continuous professional development.
  • Oversee operational functions including clinical governance, occupancy management, financial performance, health and safety, and regulatory compliance.
  • Encourage open and effective communication with residents, families, team members, and external stakeholders.
  • Champion ongoing service development and quality improvement initiatives across both the nursing home and associated retirement village.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • A recognised third-level qualification in nursing, along with an active NMBI PIN.
  • A minimum of six years’ post-registration experience, including at least three years working in care of the older person.
  • At least three years’ experience in a management or leadership role within a nursing home or comparable long-term care environment.
  • A postgraduate qualification in Nursing Management, Gerontology, Healthcare Leadership, or Healthcare Management, or a willingness to undertake same.
  • Demonstrated leadership, communication, and organisational capabilities.
  • Full clean Irish driving licence and access to own transport.
